ICE Award for Rochester Bridge

ICE Award for Rochester Bridge

Rochester Bridge Balustrade Project has been granted an award by the Institute of Civil Engineers (ICE).

This was an £800,000 project to repair the balustrade on the upstream footway of the Grade II listed Rochester Old Bridge which is the main pedestrian route crossing the Medway River.

This project was awarded the ICE's Structure Award in 2011 due to the highly effective communication and collaboration between the project team (Jackson and Mott MacDonald) and the client (Rochester Bridge Trust) which ensured the work was completed 10 weeks ahead of schedule and 2% under budget.

The footway is a vital link for the inhabitants of both Rochester and Strood, and the refurbishment has greatly enhanced the appearance, and maintained the safety of this link.

Nottingham Left Bank wins Considerate Constructors Award

Nottingham Left Bank wins Considerate Constructors Award

The Sawley and Trent Meadows section of this 27km long flood defence scheme has won a national site award for the Considerate Constructors Scheme.

Jackson began working on this scheme for the Environment Agency back in 2009, constructing a 27km long flood defence along the bank of the River Trent to protect over 16,000 in the area from flooding. The route of the flood defence goes through a SSSI, residential and urban areas, all of which have thrown up fresh challenges.

Considerate Constructor's awards recognise the site's excellent standards of consideration towards their workforce, their neighbours and the environment, so this award is a credit to the project team, whom have worked tirelessly to ensure that disruption to stakeholders has been kept to a minimum.

The project is now over 50% complete, and construction is due to end in July 2012.

Welches Dam Pumping Station

Welches Dam Pumping Station

This was a contract to refurbish an existing pumping station which provides flood protection for 700 homes in the Washes area in Cambridgeshire.

Originally commissioned in 1948, the pumping station transfers water from the Counter Drain to the Ouse Washes in periods of heavy rainfall.

The bulk of the work involved removing the old diesel engines, pumps, fuel pipework and associated control systems and installing four new pumps, associated pipework, motor controls and switchgear for the new pumps.

A14 Orwell Bridge Bearing Replacement

A14 Orwell Bridge Bearing Replacement

This involved the replacement of two bearings on North Pier Five of the Orwell Bridge which carries the A14 over the River Orwell in Suffolk. The bridge deck had to be jacked 8mm in order to remove and replace the bearings and this required the bridge to be closed over a weekend in order for the work to be carried out. Due to the time restrictions associated with the road closure, the working area at the top of the pier had to be wrapped and heated in order to allow the cementicious grout to set in time to re-open the road on Monday morning.
