Jackson Engineer nominated for 'Duke Of Gloucester Young Achiever Award'

Matthew Thornton, one of Jackson's Engineers, was short-listed last year for a 'Duke of Gloucester Young Achievers Award'. This new awards scheme, organised by the Construction Youth Trust, aims to identify and celebrate the success of exceptional young professionals in the industry.

The nomination was a fantastic achievement for Matt, who has overcome a number of challenges throughout his career. For seven years, Matt studied a part-time engineering degree whilst holding down a full-time job in construction. He is now a Senior Engineer at Jackson, and is responsible for mentoring four Engineers of junior status. On top of his busy work schedule, Matt also makes time to do careers talks in schools and recently mentored a group of students at The Duston School in Northampton on the ICE Create Sport Challenge, in which the students had to design a sustainable and environmentally-friendly model sports stadium. Once a week, for four months, Matt visited the school to teach students about basic physics, health and safety and sustainability. This project was a particular success and the students won the East Midlands region final.

Regional Manager Steve Palmer said: 'This nomination is a triumph for Matt. He is a credit to Jackson and always gives 100%, not only at work but in his commitment to others around him.'
