The existing Hartlake Bridge was a early 20th century reinforced concrete structure, which was life expired and did not conform to current standards.
The solution was to provide an adjacent temporary bridge founded on contractor designed reinforced earth embankments, divert the traffic with provision for wide gauge agricultural vehicles and demolish the existing bridge.
This was achieved by mooring pontoons in the Medway and demolishing the structure onto the pontoons, exercising best practice in environmental care. Once demolished, a new composite steel and concrete deck was constructed on sheet pile wingwalls and reinforced concrete abutments founded on bearing piles.
The scheme received two awards, The Tonbridge Civic Society Award and an ICE Thomas Brassey award for an outstanding civil engineering project.
