Jackson Civil Engineering was the principal contractor managing 50 subcontractors. Works included the demolition of existing structures and construction of a new bus station, with an integral underpass link to the railway and underground stations. The adjacent park was remodelled and extensively landscaped to form a new town square and gardens incorporating a performance area and toddlers’ play park.
The bus station structure consists of a long silver canopy over a series of redbrick accommodation pods leading to a semi-circular, fully glazed element at the approach end. This double height structure provides an imposing entrance to London Underground system, with an amenity area upstairs. Bus stops, control room and passenger facilities are accessed off a central concourse protected by the canopy.
