Hydrogen fuel cell trial
is 'a total success'
Jackson has successfully collaborated with the Environment Agency on a trial to power a work site using Hydrogen Fuel Cell (HFC) technology.
The 12-week trial at Godmanchester Lock in Cambridgeshire was intended as a ‘proof-of-concept’ to assess the practicality of operating a small civil engineering site office and welfare setup solely on an HFC, eliminating reliance on noisy and polluting diesel generators.
Jackson provided leadership, a highly-skilled delivery team, and a trusted supply chain of specialist subcontractors and suppliers while the EA provided funding and ensured the compound area near the lock would accommodate all trial requirements.
Other members of the collaborative working party were TCP ECO Group, who initially provided a 4kW Hydrogen Fuel cell cabinet, 60kWh battery pack with 45kVa inverter, and hydrogen fuel tank cage, refining this system later in the trial as efficiencies increased. Carter Accommodation provided three eco ‘cabins’ adapted to maximise energy efficiency and accommodate air source heat pumps.

Clean energy option
The trial at Godmanchester proved a complete success, proving that with an efficient site setup, HFCs are practical as the sole energy source for future projects of this size and scope.
This technology is a viable clean energy option - particular on the EA’s Navigation Programme and the Collaborative Delivery Framework - for reducing emissions, improving air quality and meeting ambitious Net Zero targets.
EA Project Executive John Routledge said: “The trial was a total success, meeting all targets and eliminating the negative impacts created by diesel generators.

'The combination of hydrogen energy, air source heat pumps and a site team focussed on energy efficiency delivered measurable benefits for the local community, the environment and ecology, and Jackson’s team and supply chain.'
