Footbridge lift goes smoothly

A Jackson Highways team, working on behalf of National Highways, installed a new footbridge over the A21 in Kent earlier this month.

The lifting in of a replacement bridge – known locally as Old Cock Footbridge – took place with a weekend full road closure in both directions near Tonbridge. A 110t crane was used to lift in the three sections of the steel structure: the two outer spans are each 15m long and weigh 7.5t each; the longer middle span is 30m in length and weighs 15t.

The new bridge replaced an older pre-cast concrete bridge, which the team lifted out in mid-September. Preparation work for the replacement included hydro-demolition to the top section of the piers and the forming of a new heightened concrete section, together with adjustments to the abutments.

The new bridge sections were fabricated at nearby Hythe by specialists Nusteel Structures Limited who oversaw the installation, which went extremely smoothly and to deadline.
