It's what we call 'Good Works'

Making good choices with communities

The communities where we work will inevitably be impacted by the civil engineering projects we undertake.

These schemes could be flood prevention measures to protect homes and businesses, road improvements, public realm enhancements or infrastructure maintenance.

But there is more to the work than the work itself.

The choices we make as a lead contractor can extend the benefits of our impact beyond the project and help people more broadly.

Creating jobs, supporting skills development, and investing in local initiatives are all ways we strengthen the regions where we work.

Part of the picture

Many projects come as a result of campaigning by stakeholders for improvements or important safeguards. But, when the work starts, there’s inevitable disruption and that can create difficulties.

Aside from considerate and professional project management, it helps to welcome the community in. Our public liaison team goes to great lengths to help solve any problems that may arise and communicate the progress that is being made.

Simply by talking to people you can resolve misunderstandings and find solutions where they are needed.

Our public liaison team work closely with local communities.

Transferring knowledge, developing skills

We have a keen interest in helping to develop Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) skills.

Not only is it important for our society as a whole, it ensures the next generation of civil engineers is equipped with the right knowledge.

Within Jackson we have 24 qualified STEM ambassadors who regularly visit schools and colleges to promote foundation subjects and offer advice on career paths to future professionals.

Civic engineering

What do civil engineers do when they’re not surveying a site or digging a drainage channel? The truth is, they can never quite leave it alone.

A lot of our people are involved in community projects through volunteering days. Not all of them make direct use of their professional skills – sometimes it’s just an extra pair of hands or a new mind on the task. But if you’ve got a bit of time and you know where you can lay your hands on a digger… let’s just say you’re quite a useful person to have around.

Things that are easy for us can be complex and costly for communities. Recent highlights include school building projects, environmental interventions, and rights of way maintenance.

Paying it back

Philanthropy through project-specific funding or ongoing sponsorship arrangements can be a lifeline for community organisations whose sources of support may be limited.

In recent years Jackson has supported various good causes from sports clubs and hospices, to charities that help rough sleepers and families connected to the armed services.
