On the A14
The use of local subcontractors and carbon cutting measures were features of these infrastructure works for client Jaynic, developer of Suffolk Park – a 116-acre business park located on the A14 corridor at Bury St Edmunds.
The A14 provides the main arterial route for the region, linking the Port of Felixstowe in the east with Cambridge, the M11 and the wider motorway network in the west. Occupiers at Suffolk Park include Greene King, Dellonda, Bleckmann and Sketchers.
The Jackson team constructed a number of link roads and footways to provide access to the business units and park, which has outline planning permission for up to 2 million sq ft (185,806 sq m).
Nearby roads were also upgraded, new street lighting was installed and verges converted to cycle paths.
Balancing act: Vehicle movements are restricted to protect wildlife including over-wintering as well as nesting birds.
The team achieved a carbon reduction of 18kg/t on the surfacing of the footpaths.
Carbon reduction
The team achieved a carbon reduction of 18kg/t in this scheme by using ‘Foambase’ for surfacing the footpaths. The product is made up of 94% recycled materials and doesn’t need asphalt plant to pour or set.
The works also incorporated the reinforcement of the Anglian Water mains pipe to the park and the expansion of the fibre network, delivering super-fast broadband to businesses.
Local suppliers
Throughout construction, Jackson used local suppliers to deliver the project to a high standard and to programme.
Through effective planning and local stakeholder engagement, the team were able to re-surface and bring nearby roads Lady Miriam Way and Kempson Way up to adoptable Suffolk County Council standards without working night shifts or causing major disruption to businesses adjacent to the working area.
Prolonged snow and general poor weather threatened to delay the works significantly due to earthworks conditions but our specialist supply chain partner Tom Blackwell helped us stabilise all earthworks, preventing any extension of the programme and ensuring we completed the scheme on time.
