Stop logs demo means end is in sight at Perry Barr

A Jackson team has put on a stop-log installation demonstration as one of its last tasks at the Perry Barr and Witton flood risk management scheme.

The scheme’s flow control structure on the River Tame consists of four culverts. The stop logs are used to isolate/dam one of the culverts at a time to enable periodic inspections and maintenance to the structures.

This exercise was the last remaining physical item on the outstanding works list from Phase 2 of the Perr Barr Scheme project in North Birmingham, which provides flood protection for approximately 1,400 properties at risk from this section of the River Tame, including 950 residential properties.

The demonstration was for the benefit of Environment Agency staff who were able to see the method for installing the stop logs including the operation of the lifting beam and the mechanism to grab and release the stop logs from the beam. Downstream installation requires operatives in the water to receive and guide the stop logs into position.

They also saw what is involved in undertaking the exercise in regards to the mobilisation, marshalling and placement of the crane, as well as the footpath and cycleway diversions required to secure the lifting site from the public
