Town centre regeneration
A Jackson team was appointed to oversee this town centre regeneration scheme in Folkestone, working on behalf of Kent County Council (KCC)
The scheme – part of the Brighter Future initiative – came about after a successful Folkestone & Hythe District Council (F&HDC) bid to government, raising £20 million of funding to transform the heart of the coastal town.
Balancing act: Vehicle movements are restricted to protect wildlife including over-wintering as well as nesting birds.
The public realm improvements are designed to create a pleasant pedestrian-friendly environment.
Pedestrian-friendly
The Folkestone – A Brighter Future project has a number of components, which includes significant improvements to the road system around Folkestone Central rail station and better signage and improved links to the town centre for pedestrians and cyclists.
It will also bring changes to the road network in the town centre area to help to reduce traffic speeds around the town and create a much more pleasant pedestrian-friendly environment.
Other public realm improvements involve alterations to the existing drainage networks, street lighting and landscaping.
A new 'green heart' for the town
To facilitate these works over 70 traffic management phases have been carried out to enable the team to work safely.
Two subways, that were previously filled with drug paraphernalia and waste, have successfully been infilled with foam concrete – creating a safer environment for residents and businesses.
A key part of the scheme is the replacement of the current bus station in Bouverie Square with a new park that will create a new ‘green heart’ for the town. The area, which includes amphitheatre-style seating, can be used for events or simply for residents and visitors to enjoy the new greenery.
