Jackson team transforms disability gym

A team of Jackson volunteers has completed a DIY SOS-style makeover of Grimsby's only dedicated disability gym, creating a brighter and more welcoming space for more than 90 young people with additional needs and disadvantaged backgrounds.

The Rock Foundation charity runs the only gym in Grimsby that caters specifically for people with disabilities; it is the only dedicated safe place they can go to improve their physical health and wellbeing. Jackson contacted the charity, who then organised a paintathon, involving the stripping, plastering and painting of every wall, door and skirting board in the gym.

A team of seven Jackson colleagues spent a day-and-a-half on the project, turning the shabby looking room into a bright, inspiring and modern looking gym that reflects value back at its users.

Pam Hodge is the CEO of Rock Foundation and says the students have been blown away by the transformation.

“It was great to see the faces of our students the first morning they saw their newly decorated sports hall. There was a lot of “wows” and “it looks amazing”. Everyone staff, volunteers and students all appreciated all the hard work that the Jackson team put in to make this possible. I have no idea how to put into words how much a difference it has made to everyone,” said Pam.

The project was only made possible thanks to massively generous donation of materials and equipment from the Grimsby branches of Crown Paints, Dulux and Speedy Hire.

Jackson’s Public Liaison Officer, Graham Parker helped to organise the event. “We have a business aim to leave the communities we work close to in a better position than when we started our work near to them. This project touched a lot of our hearts, and we feel a deep sense of pride and honour in helping this particular group of people”, said Graham.

Jackson Civil Engineering is currently carrying out a major sea wall defence project nearby, on the south bank of the Humber. As part of that project, it is carrying out community-based social value projects.
